Thomas Essery Remembers the fire at Turvey Mill
Recording of Thomas Essery, retired farm worker and resident of Turvey born ion 2nd July 1879, in which he discusses having to walk to work and the fire that destroyed Turvey Mill in 1885. He tells how the residents of Bridge Street were woken and how they stood on the bridge and watched the fire burn. Mention is made of the fact that the Whitworths, who owned the Mill had installed new machinery the previous year but had not taken out insurance. He believes that with insurance they would have rebuilt the mill and remained in Turvey.
The recording was made by the University of Leeds as part of a research project into English Dialects.
