Chapter 1: The village as it used to be.
The chapter provides a brief guided tour of the village making particular reference to the fact that many of the buildings that can be seen owe much to the philanthropy of Charles Longuet Higgins of Turvey Abbey and Thomas Charles Higgins of Turvey House. Mentioned is made as to the poor state of housing prior to 1849 and the existence of cholera in the village. Among the items mentioned in the chapter are the clearing of the trees in the village following the death of John Higgins, the Rector Legh Richmond, the new Rectory built in 1839, The Cross on the site of a former preaching cross, the Three Chequers public house becoming the Three Cranes, the Workhouse, Stocker’s End, Nell’s Well, the Three Fishes, the Flour Mill, Jonah, the Schools, the Manor Room, the Reading room and how Lacemaking was an important industry in the village.
