Long Life in the Villages
A letter from I Timpson of Newport Pagnell, formerly of Turvey, to the Beds Times and Independent newspaper, published on 14 October 1898, about life in Turvey in the 19th Century.
He writes about the Higgins families, the farming families (Whitworth, Bolton, Keech, Paine, Gaton, Davis, Skevington, Dunkley, Halatt, Sturges), Rev Russell and Mr Cecil, the tradespeople (Bailey, Finch, Skevington, Jones, Chater), the policeman (Fowler), who also extracted teeth, the farm workers (Paine, Bailey, Eaton, Edmonds, Wooding, Tysoe, Banford, Rowe, Stock, Sergeant), and the lace buyers (Vincent, Bithrey). He also mentions the old school and lanes before the re-building of the village.
